Belly Dance Melbourne Classes

Class Descriptions

Belly Dancing is a mesmerising and beautiful ancient art form originally from the Middle East. Egyptian Belly Dance is distinctive for its sinuous undulations, succinct rhythmic hip accents and flowing, curvaceous movements. Egyptian dance allows each dancer to create expressive and joyous movements that reflect their own individuality, musicality, and passion. Popular for health, fitness, sensuality and fun, belly dancing is accessible for anyone at any age. It is a relatively low impact dance which helps to strengthen and tone muscles whilst allowing for personal and spiritual growth & enjoyment. Our Belly Dance Melbourne classes strive to provide quality and enjoyable Egyptian belly dance lessons for everyone. Beginners Belly Dance (0 - 3 months) introduces you to the foundation movements and variations that make up the basic Belly Dance repertoire. Technique is explained and demonstrated clearly and each movement related to historical, cultural and musical context. All movements are danced to music at the end of each class to enable students to practise and get a feeling for the dance form. Intermediate Belly Dance (3 months - 2 years) continues your training with more advanced movements and introduces combinations, sequences, choreography and improvisation. In Intermediate you'll explore different styles of Belly Dance and props plus you'll get the opportunity to perform if you wish. Advanced Belly Dance (2+ years) focuses on progressive technique, refining and polishing movements, stage presence, developing your own style,  advanced choreography and prop usage, and performances.

BELLY DANCE TRIBAL STYLE a popular modern innovation originally developed from traditional dance techniques in America and is often called ATS (American Tribal Style). It is largely an improvisational style danced in groups which combines folkloric Middle Eastern, modern, and world dance steps to create an exciting new dance form. The style repeats simple moves and symbolic gestures in patterns cued by leaders, building with the music & the interaction between dancers. At Navel Gazers a format of moves, variations and cues are taught in this style called Red Belly Black. A book about the style and listing all the moves was written by Melusina to help students learn Tribal. Tribal style is powerful, elegant, graceful and fun with a strong Flamenco-like posture. It is a challenging and dramatic style. Within belly dance Tribal style is suited to dancers with a good grounding in regular Belly Dance and whom love dancing together with others. Tribal Style Foundations Level 1 explores the posture, positions, basic moves and variations, cues and concepts of Tribal. Belly Dance Tribal Style Foundations Level 1 is recommended as an excellent preparation for Tribal Fusion & Contemporary Belly Dance.

TRIBAL FUSION & CONTEMPORARY BELLY DANCE are cutting edge, ground breaking new styles fusing Tribal (ATS) with Contemporary Dance/Ballet, Belly Dance and Street styles. The moves are often serpentine and muscular with sharp accents and smooth, rippling isolations coupled with graceful leg extensions and turns. This style is very new, and often quite dark and has evolved from traditional Tribal Belly Dance as it’s rebellious half-sister. Fusion is more of a soloist, choreographed dance form. The Red Belly Black dance format also covers Fusion so all the moves we use can be found in Melusina’s book. Which can be found here: Tribal & Fusion Belly Dance ebook

Tribal & Fusion Advanced

Tribal & Fusion Levels 2 (a) and (b) start to explore Fusion Style whilst still maintaining the strong foundations learnt in Tribal Style Level 1. You must complete Tribal Style Level 1 before advancing to this style. The first half hour focuses on learning new moves and variations, the second half hour will be drills, body conditioning and improvisation. Students can choose to either do the full hour in Level 2 (both a. and b.), half an hour of Level 2 (either a. or b.) or 1.5 hours (combining either Tribal Level 1 and Level 2a or Tribal Level 3 and Level 2b). Tribal Fusion/Contemporary Belly Dance Lvl 3 is the advanced Red Belly Black Troupe class. This class is only open to students who have completed Tribal Level 1, Tribal Fusion Level 2, and have had several years of Belly Dance and Tribal experience. This class focuses on advanced technique, drilling, and performance choreography.
